  4.     When Iraq used poison gas to kill Kurdish civilians last year,
  5. the U.S. joined other nations in condemning chemical warfare. But
  6. last week it became clear that at least one American company has
  7. helped spread the deadly weapons. After Customs Service agents
  8. accused Baltimore-based Alcolac International, Inc., of illegally
  9. shipping hundreds of tons of thiodiglycol, a solvent that can be
  10. used in making mustard gas, the firm agreed to plead guilty to
  11. violating export laws. Prosecutors believe the chemical shipments
  12. eventually arrived in Iraq and Iran.
